  • This is what I assume a small family cemetery plot would be. I love the fact that it is in a pasture with cows and horses. So even though the family members (or member) who are buried there are no longer here, they are still here. They are still a part of daily life. Literally a part of the farm.

  • It reminds me of a poem by e. e. cummings entitled "i am a little church (no great cathedral)".
"around me surges a miracle of unceasing
birth and glory and death and resurrection:
over my sleeping self float flaming symbols
of hope, and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains"

  • I got to this place very early. As such I had about an hour when I was the only person there. I climbed to the very top and sat with my back resting against the blocks you see at the top. It was so peaceful/powerful. You could feel history.
An interesting aside, to get to this site you have to cross an old school ferry. The kind that is connected on both sides of the river by a metal cable. I shared this ferry with a local police officer. I noticed his pistol and as a former military man I asked him "Is that a 9 mm?" He said to me "Yes, it's a Taurus and it's very heavy". He then proceeded to hand me his loaded pistol so I could judge the weight for myself! This would never happen in the States as the cardinal sin for a police officer is to lose control of his weapon. In Belize, things are a little more laid back!
